All About Blepharoplasty (Eye Lift): The Most Commonly Done Anti-Aging Plastic Surgery
The beauty pursued by the middle-aged is quite different from the appearance pursued by the younger generation. It cannot be represented only by specific factors such as a large double eyelid, a straight nose, and a slim body. This is because when middle-aged, the overall impression becomes more important, and creating a youthful and energetic impression becomes a more important factor in forming a likable image rather than clear features. This is why lower eyelid surgery has become a representative middle-aged surgery.
Blepharoplasty is a representative anti-aging surgery that anyone would considers at least once in her or his lifetime. It is also extremely popular in Korea as it is a safe and simple surgery but makes a huge difference to look more youthful. In addition, there are many middle-aged people who are satisfied after surgery because they can solve not only external problems but also functional issues.
Who Needs Blepharoplasty?
According to Dr. Yoo WonJae at Dream Plastic Surgery, Seoul, Korea, upper blepharoplasty is recommended to those with droopy, wrinkled eyelids. Droopiness of the eyelids can cause infection around the eyes and it also covers the pupils. Lower blepharoplasty is suitable for those with eye bags and severe wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes. In the aging process under the eyes, the elasticity of the under eye muscle gets lost, and the fat protrudes, and the underside of the protruding fat appears shaded. In addition, the phenomenon that the skin becomes darker due to frequent skin irritation occurs. This results in the impression of being tired and old. While a patient can choose one of upper and lower blepharoplasty after the consultation, it is common in Korea to get both procedures done at the same time.
How it Works
Upper Blepharoplasty
Incision is made at the double eyelids line and excessive fat, muscle and skin are removed on the upper eyelids. The incision line will be carefully sutured. There won't be a visible scar after the surgery as the incision is made on the same line as double eyelids.
Lower Blepharoplasty
First of all, doctor will remove sagging skin under the eyes followed by fat repositioning or removal. Then doctor will restore the muscle and suture the incision line.
For both surgery, operation time is 30 to 50 min and patient will be under sleep anesthesia during the operation. No hospitalization is needed.
Downtime & Aftercare
Recovery takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on individuals. During recovery, a patient can experience swelling and itchiness. It will take up to 2 months to look completely natural. It is recommended to avoid alcohol, smoking, severe exercise and sauna for 4 weeks after the surgery to support fast recovery.
Risks and Side Effects
According to Dr. Wonjae Yoo, “Although blepharoplasty is considered a safe and simple plastic surgery with a long history, it is also a surgery with many side effects reported after surgery. In the case of eyelid reversal, the health of the eyes may also be damaged. If the forehead sagging, midface sagging, and the degree of protrusion of the eyeball are not taken into account, side effects such as a fierce impression or severe eyelid wrinkles and small eyes may occur”
“In order to increase satisfaction after surgery, it is important to consider improving the basic functions of the eye along with the aesthetic aspect. “Because of the large change in impression after lower eyelid surgery, it is necessary to perform customized surgery individually.”
