Everything You Need to Know About Forehead Reduction Surgery

In South Korea, it is not surprising to hear that many people go under double eyelids and rhinoplasty. Most recently though, there has been an increasing interest in surgery to get ideal facial proportions. The shape and size of the forehead is one of the biggest factors in the proportions of the face.

For men, a large m-shape forehead may make it seem like they have early hair loss problems. Women who have broad foreheads may feel that it looks too masculine. As you might know, it can be difficult to try various hairstyles if you have large forehead, such as updos. To find out more about forehead reduction surgery, Eunogo interviewed Dr. Ahn Yong Soo from ATOP Plastic Surgery Center.

What is forehead reduction surgery?

Forehead reduction surgery is an operation that can improve the appearance of a wide forehead. With an incision along the hairline, the scalp is lowered towards the forehead to reduce the width of the forehead. The incision scar is invisible and the shape and hairline are natural, making the face more complete. The ideal face ratio is 1:1:0.8 for the forehead, eyebrow to nose, and nose to chin. At ATOP, forehead reduction surgery is performed delicately to match the ideal face ratio.

Who do you recommend the forehead reduction surgery to?

A forehead reduction surgery is recommended to anyone with a wide forehead vertically or horizontally, because the surgery reduces the forehead in both directions. It can also help reduce the appearance of a widow's peak. Although the widow's peak does not completely disappear with a forehead reduction surgery, you can expect a less prominent widow's peak.

What is a hairline correction?

There are two ways to correct the hairline: hair transplant and forehead reduction surgery. The advantage of hair transplant is that it takes your own hair and transplants it, leaving no scars. However, it takes a lot of hair to correct the hairline and a long time is required for the results to show. As for forehead reduction surgery, the surgery is done by pulling the scalp forward, so you will see results immediately. Dr. Ahn pointed out that these days, he recommends patients to do forehead reduction surgery and hair transplant together.

What is the method of surgery and what can I expect after the surgery?

Usually, a forehead reduction surgery is performed under sleep anesthesia. The surgery usually takes about an hour, and the stitches can be removed after about a week, so the recovery period is also short. It is usually recommended to only wash your hair after removing stitches. Dyeing or perm is possible after about a month. After two to three months, hair will begin to grow in the scar area. This will make the scar less noticeable and result in a more natural hairline.

Is it true that you lose feeling on the head after having a forehead reduction surgery?

There are two major nerve areas that are included in the scope of the operation when performing forehead reduction surgery. Some of these sensory nerves are damaged and some of them are maintained when you do a forehead reduction. It is true that the crown of the head will feel duller compared to other areas after the surgery. However, after about three months, feeling in most of the areas will come back. And after about six months, feeling in the crown of the head comes back.

Is it possible to insert a forehead implant together with forehead reduction surgery?

It's possible, because the forehead reduction surgery does not actually involve the forehead area but rather the scalp, so it is possible to insert a forehead implant at the same time.

Is surgery possible even if I have a forehead implant?

Yes it is possible even with an implant in the forehead. Again, this is because the surgery does not involve the forehead area at all.

From what age is it possible to get a forehead reduction surgery?

It is possible to get the surgery any time after puberty. By the time a person is about 15, his or her head would have grown to its full size by almost 90 percent. After puberty, the head no longer grows, so you can operate any time after that.

What is the difference among forehead reduction, forehead lift, and eyebrow lift?

Many people are confused about forehead reduction, forehead lift, and eyebrow lift. Forehead reduction is when the scalp is pulled downwards and this reduces the area of the forehead. Forehead lift is when the forehead is pulled upwards to give a lifting effect. Eyebrow lift is done with an incision along the area of the eyebrow, and only the eyebrows are raised.

    What is endotine?

Endotine was invented to fix the scalp comfortably in place. It is a safe material for the body and takes about 6-9 months to be absorbed. The key to forehead reduction is not endotine, but the scope and stability of the operation. The surgery is also possible by drilling holes in the facial bones and fixing the threads.

When will I see the full results of the forehead reduction surgery?

The results are visible the day after the surgery. However, Dr. Ahn would like to point out that it takes about three months for the hairline to become more natural. It can be difficult to decide whether to get the surgery since it is invasive after all, but Dr. Ahn strongly recommends it if you want results that are more permanent and natural.

Before & After Photos of Forehead Reduction Surgery

Forehead reduction should not simply focus on reducing the absolute length of the forehead. After analyzing individual facial shapes, it is important to adjust the length of the ideal forehead by considering the ratio of the forehead to the entire face. Therefore, it is important to discuss accurate surgical methods and results through sufficient consultation with a specialist with years of experience.
